ANNOUNCEMENTS

July 2010
Management Reorganizaton, by Deputy Chief Mike Despain

Effective Thursday, July 1, 2010, Fresno Fire Department Deputy Chiefs will be reassigned as follows: Training, Deputy Chief Joel Aranaz; Operations, Deputy Chief Kerri Donis; and Prevention, Deputy Chief Mike Despain

As this is my last month as the Training Chief, I would like to say a heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support these past few years. Even with the economic setbacks we’ve seen lately, the Training Division is still moving forward and continues to fulfill its mission of helping everyone do their job better and return home safely at the end of their shift.
I would be remiss without thanking the members (past and present) of the Training and Support Services Division, especially Training Officers Christine Boozer and  Carolyn Sadoian and Senior Secretary Judi Huss, who keep the place from falling apart. Thanks also to Captain Perkins and Captain French for helping me through those first few crazy months.

Finally, a big thanks to Chief Bruegman and the members of the Department for allowing me into the family and demonstrating everyday their dedication to the profession.

No Experience Necessary, by Deputy Chief Mike Despain

Read Deputy Chief Mike Despain's article published in the recent issue of Fire Chief Magazine to learn why "more departments are choosing civilians, rather than firefighters, for their training officers". The article, titled No Experience Necessary, may be accessed online at: http://firechief.com/training/ar/civilian-training-officers-201004/.

Swede Systems Flashover Prop

The Fresno Fire Department is proud to announce the arrival of a new Swede Systems Flashover Prop. The Flashover Prop offers firefighters the opportunity to observe fire behavior and the signs leading to the flashover phenomenon in a safe and controlled setting. The unit uses small amounts of Class A material to operate, which makes it: highly cost-effective; and more environmentally friendly than the traditional method of using acquired structures to burn. This unit will be made available to other fire agencies in the later part of 2009. For more information regarding the flashover prop, feel free to contact the Training Division at (559) 621-4200.

New Records Management System (RMS) & Learning Management System (LMS) in Final Stages of Development

The Training Division is gearing up for a very busy season of training through the month of June 2009. Much of the extra effort will be to provide additional professional development classes in light of the new MOU and the associated benefits of the CSFM certification system. Be sure to either take a look at the Training Division's website or the training calendars on the Document Management System for a schedule of courses. A new records management system, as well as a new online training program, are both in the final stages of development which will greatly increase training opportunities as well as make them more flexible and efficient. There will be more to come on these projects next month. Until then, be safe and be sure to enter your training records.

Rollout of Fresno Fire Department Training Division Website

Welcome to the Fresno Fire Department – Training Division website. As firefighters, we are routinely confronted with situations requiring quick decisions and actions based upon our knowledge, skills, and abilities. A comprehensive training program provides firefighters with the tools necessary to do our jobs as competently and safely as possible. The role of the Training Division is divided into three functional areas:

  • Entry-level training for new firefighters (academy);

  • In-service training to ensure all personnel continue to meet local, state, and federal training mandates; and

  • Professional development training for those seeking further career advancement or additional training in
    areas of interest.

Coordination of these roles can be incredibly complex, but the Training Division is staffed with a group of people
who are committed to providing the best quality service to the men and women of the Fresno Fire Department.
The vision of the Fresno Fire Department is to become recognized as a standard of excellence in the fire service,
and the Training Division is dedicated to doing its part to make this vision a reality.
